Davidson vs. UW

All this talk about the Green Bay Packers has almost made me forget that it is the best time of year, the best when it comes to sports anyways, March. College basketball is at its height with the tournament underway and real untainted athletes are playing their heart out for nothing more than the love of the game, a far cry from professional sports of any kind, football being the worst when it comes to overpaid crybabies that are only playing to get a paycheck. I know what you are probably thinking, these college athletes are gonna play hard to get a contract and eventually end up as nba morons too but for this brief moment its the truest form of sport I can possibly hope for. Dont get me wrong here, I still love football and I will allways love it, but lets all give some love, since were talking about not giving love, to Davidson, who are fueling the fire that is the ncaa tournament. The defeat over Georgetown was the best game Ive witnessed since the Illini came back to beat Arizona in what was just the best game that ever happened hands down. We are in for a treat tommorrow when they take on mighty Wisconsin and whoever wins is gonna have to work very hard for it. This tournament has been a good one but really, Ive never seen one without the nonstop action that comes with kids playing with all heart. I wish all sports could take a note from these teams that have made it so far and we would be entertained by sports rather than athletes that have been bought and sold, the pricetag being their heart. Good luck to all the teams still in the tournament!!!!!!!!

'Tis true. The NCAA tournament is a great experience, but I disagree on the reason. I think that the reason the NCAA tournament is so fun to watch is this: nothing in sports will ever compare to the one-loss, go-home playoff system. The NFL playoffs and the games immediately leading up to it have set ratings records for years. The Super Bowl is the only professional sports championship that is a single game, and that is why it is so great. The NCAA tournament surpasses ever sporting event in our country in ratings except the Super Bowl for the same reason: there are no other playoff systems with the potential for drama (and when college football learns this, they finally be able to make the BCS something meaningful—playoffs).

I wonder what percentage of baseball, basketball, or hockey playoff series go to a final game. Any playoff game where only one team can walk away the winner, is a joke. Who cares? If the team who cannot win the series wins the game, it was a pointless game. If neither team can win the series, why the hell would anyone watch it? It's like emotionally investing in a lottery that I know no one will win. Everything important will be on SportsCenter or YouTube the next day anyway. Those games have less meaning than a regular season NFL game or a NCAA football or baskeball game.

These reasons spread to every other aspect of fanhood. The NFL draft is one of the most highly rated sports events in our country. The NFL draft had higher ratings than MLB and NBA championhip series games in 2007. All of this ties in to the "any given Sunday" approach to sports. If your season can end or be permanently altered because of one bad preformance, people will watch it just to see a car fire. There are no sports that embody that more than college football and basketball and the NFL, and there are no other sports that can compete in terms of fan support, either.

All of this is because people naturally cheer for the underdogs when they have no investment in a game. In a baseball playoff series, the underdog has to win 4 games. In sports that are fun to watch, the underdog only has to win one game to crush the dreams of a whole city... and when the 2008 draft happens, I can forget about my own dreams being crushed that same way.

Since this is the first year I can remember where I didn't submit a pool (because I'm too broke for even a free gambling opportunity), I'm cheering for the underdog in every game I watch.

All that being said, MLB players are way worse than NFL players when it comes to being overpaid cry babies. A-Rod makes something like $40 million a year. That's 100 times what our President gets paid! Although I will admit, A-Rod's also done less damage to our country. I think we could pay the President $40 billion if he doesn't cost our country $400 trillion in debt. I bet if the President got paid a percentage of a budget surplus, he would make sure there was one every year. Actually, that's a great idea—pay our President through revenue sharing! I'll have to delve further into that idea on the Politics board, though...
